Flour Play 2024 (Full Course)
Join Deep Routes in the kitchen for our 2nd Annual Black and Indigenous foodways centered baking course!

This series will be at the 101 level technique-wise (think cakes, cookies, and breads), and offer 4 hands-on, in-person sessions to practice and apply fundamental baking techniques and concepts. This series will hold introductory discussions about the plants, bakers, and farmers of African, Asian, and Indigenous diasporas that make modern baking possible. This course will center people of African & Indigenous diasporas. White participants are welcome to join if they’re able to pay at the highest rate.
This 4-part Course will support you in:
- Developing a foundational understanding of working with flours, fats, sugars, leaveners, and flavorings in baking.
- Contextualizing baking in the historical context of BIPOC foodways and movements.
- Deepening your relationship to the plants and pastry arts stories of Afro-Indigenous diasporas.
- Feeling more confident when it comes to baking!

Each class includes all materials to prepare baked goods in class, printed materials, and other surprises to take home!
If you're a Black person who has a low-income or other financial barriers that would prevent you from registering, please complete our quick scholarship form. We will have a limited number of scholarships available based on how much funds we raise from folks who pay at the highest rate and our merch fundraiser, but we'll do our best to support you in attending. If you're invested in this kind of course, we want to invest in you!

COVID SAFETY:
All sessions will be in-person and participants must complete a COVID test within 24 hours prior to the session, and provide a photo of a negative test the day of class.
A limited number of COVID tests will be available to participants but be sure to arrive 30 minutes before class (12:30pm) so there is enough time to administer the test away from the class area and get settled in.
Participants must remain masked during discussion and preparation of baked goods, and everyone will be welcomed to remove masks for tastings and towards the end of class. If masks are inaccessible to you please reach out via email (hello@deeproutes.org) Subject Line: "Flour Play Mask Access".
Thanks to A.I.R. NYC we'll also have air purifiers in the space.
LOCATION: Course will be occurring in a commercial kitchen space in The South Bronx, exact address will be emailed to registered participants.
